Hello, I’m Kate!

I’m an illustrator, author and poet who finds joy in writing stories and creating books.

Since graduating from the North Wales School of Art & Design in 2004, I’ve worked on lots of books for children, including picture books, non-fiction and children’s fiction. My first book, The Best Chip, won the runner-up Macmillan Children’s Book Prize in 2004, and the first edition was published shortly after. It is a rollicking rhyming tale about a thrilling chippy experience from my childhood, which quickly turned to disaster!

Some of my other illustrated books have won or been shortlisted for awards. Titles include Football Fever! (written by Alan Durant) and Never Say NO to a Princess! (written by Tracey Corderoy), which have also featured on CBeebies.

As well as books, I’ve worked on many designs for the greetings industry, library services, commissioned prints and illustrations for packaging and branding.

My favourite art materials are: trusty pencils, pen and ink, and scissors for snipping paper to use in collage creations. My least favourite art material is charcoal, because it squeaks on the paper (eek!) and smudges all over my shirt sleeve (argh!) But, if you like squeaky sounds and big black smudgy-everywhere mess, then charcoal is perfect!

I love writing and illustrating funny stories and poems. Secretly, I wish I could swoosh back in time to write and take tea with the great nonsense poet, Edward Lear, so that I can introduce him to the wonder of the Staffordshire oatcake.

I live in the wonderful city of Stoke-on-Trent (where the teapots are TOP) with my super space-scientist husband Alan and our best fluffy friend, Joey Dog. We like going for big adventures, long walks and chasing squirrels… Those scurrying squirrels are far too speedy though.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoy having a browse of my website while you’re around, and that my mention of Staffordshire oatcakes hasn’t made you feel too peckish. You can also check out my latest Instagram and Facebook posts.

Have a great day!

Kate
